Driver appearances aren’t like they used to be. In 1990, seeing a driver in person was almost like seeing the pope. It was a glimpse at a side you didn’t get to see—like a teacher having an “outside” life.
Now, It’s so easy for social media admins to snag an interview and instantly blast it to the world. Drivers are accessible as ever. They even participate in TikTok trends and Instagram memes. Guys like Hocevar are revolutionizing what it’s like to be a Gen Z driver.
Back in ‘90, promoting and bringing drivers together for an event hundreds of miles from Lake Norman was monumental. That event was the 1990 NASCAR vs NHRA Darrell Gwynn charity softball game.

On September 13, 1990, NASCAR and NHRA came together for an exhibition softball game at Reading Phillies Stadium. According to NHRA.com, it was held as a benefit for Darrell Gwynn following the devastating crash that changed his life earlier that year. Gwynn suffered severe spinal cord injuries during an NHRA event in England when his dragster crashed and caught fire, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down.
The full recap of the event is on NHRA.com. It talks about icons from both motorsports communities. Just look at the lineup.

I am from the Reading area, and this might be one of the craziest sporting events ever to happen in the city. The Phillies brought several major league stars through their farm system, including Mike Schmidt and Ryan Howard. However, the number of NASCAR legends in Reading at one time is significant in NASCAR history—especially outside of the track.
On that late summer day in 1990, my Dad left work early, picked up my cousin from school, and drove to the stadium. These pictures he took are so nostalgic. From the old R-Phil’s scoreboard to the vintage 3-quarter sleeves of the players, it was a one-of-a-kind display of charity and fan experience.
The Reading Fairgrounds Facebook group chatter says the game felt like the biggest crowd in Reading Phillies history. Some say even bigger numbers than rehab games of MLB players.
It shows that in 1990 NASCAR was hitting its stride and erupting in sports media. I mean, Dale Earnhardt was on the bench, and that’s all you need to know.
The event raised over $150,000 for Gwynn’s recovery and provided a moment unlike anything in motorsports history. All the photos below are ours and moments you may have never seen.
